Skrillex - Bangarang EP

Artist: Skrillex
Album: Bangarang EP
Label: Big Beat, Atlantic

Following my previous review of Kaskade where I threw in a little Skrillex magic, I decided to follow suit with this. The original post-hardcore singer/rhythm/keys for From First To Last Sonny Moore turned EDM icon Skrillex is at it again with his Bangarang EP. It's a 7 track thriller that has everything from classic rock influence to hip hop to pop. The masterfully crafted extended play incorporates what you would expect from a Skrillex track set, but with even more to offer as the album flows. The title track Bangarang has a pretty sick back beat, with a plucked strings sort of sound, and then dives into what you would expect from Skrillex, but in a more refined manner. Breakn' A Sweat dives into a mix of a lot of genre influence, especially from The Doors, who had indeed mentioned music going this direction. And finally, my personal favorite (mainly due to how hard it hits in my car with my 2 12's), Kyoto takes a hip-hop/rap influence and twists a wonderful dubstep twist to it. It's pretty addictive song, but I'll leave that for you all to judge:

"Kyoto (feat. Sirah)"

Overall Album Rating: 10/10. Brilliant mixing and brilliant listening, and definitely a fresh new direction.

Bangarang EP is available on Beatport, iTunes, and soon on CD.

Kaskade - Fire & Ice

Artist: Kaskade
Album: Fire & Ice
Label: Ultra Records

America's Best DJ 2011 is turning up the heat, and cooling it right back down with this album. I literally had the whole album on repeat during my final time, so I've had a very good listen. The album is split between two discs, with the first disc being "Fire" and the second disc being "Ice" (as the album name implies). Both discs feature the same ten tracks but with a different feel to each depending on the disc. The first disc "Fire" is your Kaskade upbeat and brilliantly worked house selection, with perfect transitions, wonderfully worked beats, and guest vocals from people like Skylar Grey and Neon Trees. Ice then takes these tracks and smooths them out, making them much more ambient and relaxing, which is a nice touch. Personally I prefer the fire side to the ice side, but I don't think I could name a bad song on the album as a whole. Personal favorites are Llove (feat. Haley) and Room For Happiness (feat. Skylar Grey). Below is a sample of what this album has to offer with the track Lick It which features some extra magic from Skrillex:

"Lick It (feat. Skrillex)"

Overall Album Rating: 10/10. Brilliant mixing and brilliant listening.

The Devil Wears Prada - Dead Throne

Artist: The Devil Wears Prada
Album: Dead Throne
Label: Ferret

I'm really excited about introducing this one, seeing as it came out a couple hours ago in the states (east coast at least), so it's basically a first look, also a first for me. You may have heard the few singles circulating about such as "Born To Lose" and "R.I.T.", but Dead Throne has much much more to offer. Advancing on the style that has always been with TDWP, Dead Throne brings the vocal genius of Mike Hranica to light, as well as the proficient skill in the rest of the band. The album holds the heaviest riffs and breakdowns I have heard from a TDWP album to date, and goes back to many of the principles from Dear Love with completely non-clean vocal songs; however, with that in mind, this album far reaches on a new style, and quite a beautiful one at that. The lyrics are delicately crafted to give the clearest meaning and the smoothest transitions. The guitar work is just stunning, pulling the listener in with new more refined lyrics, and truly showing a new maturity in the band. The drumming is as good as it's always been, only much heavier to match that of the fretwork. Jeremy's clean vocals add another powerful element to the band, and for the first time that I know of, Chris Rubey on lead guitar offers his raspier scream to aid in Mike's crafted unclean vocals to give a duality sense to the music. While just as good as With Roots Above And Branches Below based on content and effective song design, this new spin on TDWP shows the versatility of the band as a whole and is well worth a listen. Below is a link to "Vengeance", the fourth song on the album, and my person favorite aside from "Kansas" the instrumental.

"Vengeance"

Overall Album Rating: 9/10. If you have been a TDWP fan in the past, you may find it slightly hard to adjust to the new style, but as soon as you dive in, you will eventually crave more.

August Burns Red - Leveler

Artist: August Burns Red
Album: Leveler
Label: Solid State

So I have been promising to do a better job then just a quick description and this album is the start. Even though it is now into August and this album was released on June 21 of this year, I cannot pass it up. Having just seen them, I figure I can support them more and share the post to the Facebook world. Having been a fan since the moment I heard them, which just so happens to be the first heavy band I had ever listened to, besides Alexisonfire, August Burns Red does it again with a superior album that is unmatched with any band I have heard this year. Having last year shadowed by albums such as "For We Are Many" and "What Separates Me From You", August Burns Red bites back with "Leveler", a well rounded mix of the intensity you find in their second album "Thrill-Seeker" and the more experienced and well rounded "Constellations". This album is more then you can expect from a band who has been making big news in the metal world lately. Using powerful, positive message lyrics, Leveler evokes a new state of a superb album, with daring adventures into uncharted turf. The title single "Internal Cannon" involves some complex guitar rhythms that evoke a sense of lying on a beach in Central America, only to tear your face from your skull with a more powerful metal experience in the shreading abilities of JB Brubaker and Brent Rambler. A more Thrill-Seeker like song comes within the song "Poor Millionaire", which is as intense as the "Back Burner" and "Truth Of A Liar". They even break things down into a softer and more smooth positive flow with the back and forth screams in "Carpe Diem", showing the true talent of the supporting vocalist Dustin Davidson, alongside main screamer Jake Luhrs. And of course, all throughout the album, the brilliant non-rhythmic drumming patterns of Matt Greiner brings life to the energy of the songs, and has only improved with the amount of talent this band brings to the table. This album was so good, that I as a stickler for saving money made sure to have it on my record shelf in physical state, not just digital. It is a masterpiece, and my pick for best metal album of this year. But I won't be so quick to finalize that with so much left to come. As always, you can check out the title single "Internal Cannon" below, directly from Youtube.

"Internal Cannon"

Overall Album Rating: 11/10. More than I could have wished for. And that's enough.

Vans Warped Tour 2011

So obviously this is a little late, but on Monday I went to Lakewood to see the lineup for Warped Tour 2011, and I must say, I have never been more impressed. I went with a few friends of mine, and met up with plenty more there later. But it's time to do what I'm working on improving, and that's reviewing the music (which may lead to new albums in the future, hinting at "The Devil Wears Prada's" album "Dead Throne").

To start out, I saw Attack Attack! who I thought was to be unimpressive because of the recent removal of Johnny Franck, the bands clean vocalist and rhythm guitarist...formally of course. A giant American flag draped the back of the stage as they opened with "AC-130" which I must say sounded a bit awful live. It seemed like Caleb Shomo was a little tired and not putting forth the full scream, but I did give them a chance. After this they played a remix intro to "Sexual Man Chocolate" which sounded awesome, but as soon as the clean singing started, it was a bust.

From here I moved on to The Word Alive, which was an amazing set. They played mostly heavier songs from their album "Deceiver" as well as telling the interfering security officers to stop fucking up their pit. It is a metal show after all. I even got a piece of lead singer Tyler "Telle" Smith's hand when he went out into the crowd after amazing screaming and a sick back flip on stage. From here, I went to my personal favorite August Burns Red, which I have yet to review their new album (but will after this, so look for it above :D). They kicked ass, as always, and I picked up some merch from both of these phenomenal bands for their efforts. Next up was Of Mice & Men at 2:10, which saw the return of Austin Carlile, the lead screamer, and a MUCH better fit then replacement Jerry Roush, seeing as he had already insulted the former's dead mother, of which he wrote a song about and screamed for wonderfully. Take that Roush! But I look forward to your EP with Glass Cloud the same...

Then came We Came As Romans, who were completely off, as always, but are of course very good on the album. I guess it just wasn't their day, so off we went to wait for D.R.U.G.S. Led by Craig Owens, former of Chiodos, the band got off to an insane start at 4:30, and was all about the winking, including myself and my friend. He also told my friend, probably his biggest fan in the world, that he was the fucking man, and handed him the mic to sing. We both got a handshake, but he got his wishes. After that came Dance Gavin Dance which opened with "Lemon Meringue Tie", my personal favorite song from them with an oddly familiar voice of Johnny Craig, who was supposed to have been in rehab. But I'll take him back on the drugs if he will do more shows like that, just awesome. After this a break ensued while waiting on the final three bands on the list, Miss May I, A Day To Remember, and The Devil Wears Prada.

Upon sitting and waiting, it had not rained yet, and it rains every year, no matter what, so I mentioned that it would probably be during TDWP's song "Escape" about a zombie invasion. Soon conversation with high school friends moved on to the Miss May I show with a crazy amount of large black beach balls and a marathon circle pit that would show up any. Watching and awaiting ADTR, I carefully planned. ADTR was going on stage, and after hearing the first part of "Swing" at Miss May I's show, I was ready. ADTR opened the show with "I'm Made Of Wax Larry, What Are You Made Of?" and kept the crowd going absolutely insane. They even played, in tribute to Millencolin and not usually in the U.S., the song "No Cigar" in tribute to their roots. After a circle pit of massive proportions and a wall of death that the army of 300 could not have conquered, the band took it's leave with "The Downfall Of Us All" and left the stage to TDWP.

After moshing for so long, I took a break and surrendered to watching TDWP which was not a bad choice. Opening with a few songs from their most recent album "With Roots Above And Branches Below", the band started to form the clouds overhead. As soon as the song "Escape" from their "Zombie EP" started, the rain started to fall and did not let up until after the final song "Assistant To The Regional Manager" a clever "Office" title, and leading into part of "Recovery". An unfair use of special effects by using nature, but one hell of a show.

These were only a few of the main bands that I cared to comment about in detail. In addition, the beginning band of Astro Jones with their punkish pop style, a second of I Set My Friends On Fire, Kelsey, Pepper, and a little longer sets with Relient K, Family Force 5, and Big D, it was a well rounded day of awesome with which I am already waiting to see again next year.

Crossfade - We All Bleed

Artist: Crossfade
Album: We All Bleed
Label: Eleven Seven Music

So I'm only about a month behind on this release, but I listened today and I just couldn't get enough. Crossfade has always managed to make high quality music and this album is no exception. Deep lyrics, low rhythms, and more incredible sound from this band, who has not released an album since 2006. Nearly 5 years in the making, this album is worth it. The album's title track "Killing Me Inside" can be viewed below.

"Killing Me Inside": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhf59O0ASx8

Overall Album Rating: 8/10 Well worth a look if you are a Crossfade fan.

Omar LinX - City of Ommz

Artist: Omar LinX
Album: City of Ommz
Label: Unsigned

So since I'll be away for the weekend, I wanted to share a double-header today, featuring up and coming Toronto based rapper Omar LinX. You may know him from collaborations with Zeds Dead dubstep, but the man is much more talented as his new album highlights. It's a fresh break from traditional rappers who tend to talk about the game, drugs, and other shit, without being too much into Eminem's "my life" turf. The mixing of the tracks in incredible, and in some cases very Zeds Dead influenced without the "whomp-whomp" effects. It's definitely worth a look. Below is a sample of his songs "You're Wrong (feat. Redway)" and my personal favorite serious song "Jackie Boy".

"You're Wrong (feat. Redway)": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ri2xxglQyLU

"Jackie Boy": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oH1N213PNFY

Overall Album Rating: 9/10 Excellent backbeats, raps, and fresh new rhymes on the scene.

Right now Omar LinX is giving his album away for free right now at www.omarlinx.com and you also have the option to purchase and receive a disc. Well worth it either way.

Attack Attack! - Attack Attack! Deluxe Re-Issue

Band: Attack Attack!
Album: Attack Attack! Deluxe Re-Issue
Label: Rise Records

So for my first posting, I'm going to highlight an album which has been awesome in my personal music library, and has only grown to be an even larger release than I expected. Released July 19th, 2011, the Deluxe Re-Issue of the popular self-titled album has 8 more song, with 4 totally new songs, 2 remixes, and 2 acoustics. The new songs feature not so much electronic singing, with the departure of Johnny Franck. It's almost a little more pop sounding than the heavy original songs, but the musical ability is still just as great. With a different sound that is adaptive, hopefully Attack Attack! has big things coming in the future. Below is a link to the single "Last Breath" and the original "Smokahontas" for comparison purposes:

"Last Breath": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLvUN8kdkdM&ob=av2e

"Smokahontas": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9hyF042S8o&ob=av2e

Overall Album Rating: 8/10 (Mostly because the original is still just as incredible)
